Singapore, 13 September 2024 – The Bangsawan Cup 2024 unfolded at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, where young talents and seasoned performers alike took the stage to celebrate the rich tradition of Malay theatre. The event, made possible by the generous support of Esplanade, was held in the newly inaugurated White Room, providing an intimate setting for the performances. The event featured a Bangsawan Stageplay Competition with two categories: preschoolers and an open category for performing enthusiasts.
In the morning session, preschoolers from 7oaks lit up the stage with their enthusiasm and budding talent. Thanks to Opera Academy's training program for 7oaks' preschool teachers, the young performers brought the colourful narratives of Bangsawan to life with remarkable energy. Their eagerness to learn and perform was evident, and they delighted the audience with their charming portrayal of this traditional Malay theatre form. The participation of these preschoolers not only entertained but also inspired hope for the continued preservation and appreciation of Bangsawan among the younger generation.
Guest of Honour, Mr Nadiputra, a distinguished figure in the Malay arts community, graced the event, emphasising the importance of nurturing traditional arts among the younger generation. His presence underscored the event's significance in Singapore's cultural landscape.
The evening saw the Open Category competition, where performing enthusiasts from various backgrounds took to the stage. This segment allowed participants to showcase their creativity and dedication to Bangsawan, presenting diverse narratives while staying true to the traditional elements of the art form. The performances in this category highlighted the versatility and timelessness of Bangsawan, as both traditional and contemporary themes were explored. Their costumes and scripts, created by the late Hj Hamid Ahmad and Anggerik Temasek Bangsawan, added an authentic touch to the performances, allowing the audience to experience the full grandeur of this traditional art form.
The winners of both categories were awarded medals and trophies, along with vouchers sponsored by The Malayan Council and Eve Aesthetics. These prizes added a celebratory note to the event, recognising the hard work and dedication of all participants.
Mr. Noor Azhar, CEO of Opera Academy, shared his insights on the event's success, "Bangsawan Cup 2024 has been a remarkable platform for both the young and the experienced to immerse themselves in this beautiful art form. By involving participants from preschool to adult enthusiasts, we are ensuring that Bangsawan remains a living, evolving tradition. We are incredibly proud of the dedication and talent displayed by all participants, particularly the young ones who have shown us that the future of Bangsawan is indeed in good hands."
The Bangsawan Cup 2024 not only celebrated the art form but also underscored the importance of cultural preservation and continuity, bringing together participants of all ages in a shared love for the performing arts.
