Anwar Hadi Ramli is a multi-talented theatre practitioner, educator, and acclaimed playwright. With a career spanning over two decades, Anwar has been actively involved in the theatre industry since 1996. He showcases his skills as a performer, director and writer, collaborating with various theatre companies, while also imparting his knowledge through theatre education in different schools.
In 2017, Anwar's play, 'The (Assumed) Vicious Cycle of a (Melayu) Youth,' received recognition as the best drama script in the prestigious bi-annual Anugerah Persuratan. This esteemed award is the highest national-level honour for Malay Literature bestowed by the Malay Language Council of Singapore.
Another notable accomplishment came in 2019 when Anwar's play, 'Kurun Yang Hilang,' which he both wrote and directed, was mentioned in the National Day Rally speech by the Prime Minister. The play, staged by Republic Polytechnic's Pentas Karyawan, was part of the Singapore Bicentennial celebration, garnering significant attention and acclaim. One of his recent Bangsawan writings entitled “Sang Nila Utama” was staged by Anggerik Temasek Bangsawan in 2022 as part of the inaugural SIngapore’s Bangsawan Festival.
In 2020, Anwar published 4 books which compiled 10 of his stage play scripts. All 4 books are now available at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and selected NLB public libraries. One of the books, RASAlah won the Honorary Mention Award for drama scripts at the 2023 Anugerah Persuratan.
Apart from his work in theatre, Anwar has made appearances on television programs and has been featured in two films, namely 'Kallang Roar the Movie (2008)' and 'Blood Ties (2009),' which were screened in local cinemas.
Anwar's dedication to theatre making is driven by his belief that performing arts have the power to shape the character of the younger generation. Through his remarkable contributions to the theatre scene and his commitment in nurturing young talent, Anwar continues to make a lasting impact on the performing arts community.
